Israeli UN Representative Gilad Erdan Raises Hamas Leader’s Phone Number at General Assembly

In a behavior that seemed strange, the Israeli representative to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, raised a banner bearing what he said was the phone number of the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar.

Gilad Erdan’s action came during a session of the United Nations General Assembly, Tuesday evening, devoted to voting on a non-binding resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

During the session, 153 countries supported the resolution, 10 opposed it, and 23 countries abstained from voting.

Gilad Erdan rejected the ceasefire decision in Gaza, describing it as “hypocrisy” and saying that it would only lead to “prolonging death and destruction in the region” without explaining how it would lead to that.

He considered that the current ceasefire would lead to “ensuring the survival of Hamas.”

He said that if UN members “want a real ceasefire, they should contact the Hamas office in Gaza.”

He raised a small white banner, with a number written on it that he said belonged to Yahya Al-Sinwar, in addition to a picture of himself.

He addressed my delegates to the countries: “Contact Hamas and call on it to put down its weapons, surrender themselves, and release the detainees. This will bring regarding a permanent ceasefire.”

Last October, the General Assembly supported a similar resolution, but at that time 121 countries voted in favor of the resolution, 14 countries opposed it, and 44 abstained.
