Israeli Teacher Arrested for Aiding Hamas: National Security Crisis

The Israeli police and Shin Bet announced the arrest of a teacher from northern Israel, who they said “provided Hamas with the location of a military industries facility to help the movement target it with missiles.”

The Israeli newspaper “Jerusalem Post” said that the accused is Rami Habibullah, from the town of Ain Mahil, near the city of Nazareth.

The police and Shin Bet concluded that “in light of the conflict in Gaza, Habibullah decided to contact Hamas abroad and offer its assistance,” in order to identify targets for its strikes inside Israel.

According to Israeli sources, Habibullah provided a Hamas activist with a picture of a defense industries factory near his home, and the exact location of the factory, with the aim of prompting the movement to fire rockets at him. He also collected money for Hamas and provided information regarding several sensitive sites.

According to investigations, the Israeli teacher also worked to “recruit other Israeli Arabs” to facilitate Hamas’ mission in targeting vital places, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Among those recruited by Habibullah was another person named Khaled Saleh, who was arrested along with a third suspect in connection with the case.

Prosecution procedures

  • On Sunday, the Public Prosecution of the Northern District submitted an indictment once morest Habibullah and Saleh to the Central Court in Nazareth.
  • Habibullah was charged with a series of national security crimes, including contacting a foreign agent, making illegal purchases for the purpose of terrorism, and conspiracy to commit a terrorist act, among other crimes.
  • Saleh was also charged with conspiracy to commit a terrorist act.
  • “This is a dangerous act by Israeli citizens who hatched a malicious plan with Hamas activists while the State of Israel was in the midst of fighting once morest that terrorist organization,” a police and Shin Bet statement said.
  • “This activity was thwarted in its early stages, even before the cell members had time to carry it out,” she continued.
  • The statement added: “The Shin Bet and the Israeli police take seriously any involvement of Israeli citizens in activities that endanger the security of the state.”
