JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday ordered the military to evacuate civilians from Rafah in the southernmost part of the Palestinian autonomous region of Gaza and to draw up a plan to destroy the remaining Islamic group Hamas militants in the area. It was revealed that he had given instructions.

More than one million people, more than half of Gaza’s population, have taken refuge in Rafah. Although the United States announced on the 8th that it does not support the attack by the Israeli military, the Israeli military continued to carry out heavy airstrikes on the 9th. There is also growing concern from the international community.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas criticized Israel’s plan to step up attacks on Rafah, saying it was aimed at forcing Palestinian civilians out of Gaza. This was announced by the Chairman’s office.

Abbas urged the UN Security Council to take note of Israel’s actions, saying they “threaten the security and peace of the region and the world and cross all red lines.”

“We are extremely concerned about the fate of the civilian population in Rafah,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on the 9th. He said protection of civilians was necessary, but forced evacuations should not take place. He said he “does not support forced evacuations that violate international law in any way.”

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on the 9th that “Rafah’s population density is unprecedented, making it nearly impossible to protect civilians in the event of a ground attack.” It has reached the point where normal roads are blocked by tents set up by families seeking clean space.”
