Israeli President Isaac Herzog left for Bahrain on Sunday for the first visit by an Israeli head of state to the country.
Before leaving, he said the visit was a “new historic step” in relations between the two countries.
During his stay, Mr. Herzog will meet King Hamad bin Issa Al-Khalifa of Bahrain and other senior officials in the capital Manama.
Mr. Herzog expressed the hope that this visit “will lead to a new step towards peace”.
The Israeli president is accompanied by a delegation of representatives of the economic and industrial sectors.
The two sides will discuss strengthening relations, the importance of peace and ways to expand bilateral cooperation, according to a statement from the office of the Israeli presidency.
Israel and Bahrain established relations in 2020 as part of the normalization of relations between the Jewish state and several Arab countries.
Mr Herzog will also travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to meet his Emirati counterpart Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, according to the statement.
