Israeli-Palestinian conflict: Islamic Jihad militant group in Gaza and Israeli forces escalate
Fighting has intensified once more as Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants in the Gaza Strip have fired hundreds of rockets following an Israeli airstrike.
The Israeli military said it shot down most of the rockets and bombed more than 130 military installations in Gaza, including rocket launchers and weapons manufacturing facilities.
At least six people were killed and 45 injured in the bombing, according to the Gaza Strip Health Ministry.
The attack by Islamic Jihad comes following at least 15 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike the previous day.
Islamic Jihad said three Islamic Jihad leaders were killed in an Israeli airstrike.
The airstrikes were the deadliest since hostilities in the Gaza Strip in August in which 49 Palestinians were killed.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) is a powerful armed group operating in the Gaza Strip, second only to the militant sect Hamas. They have declared ‘destruction of Israel’ and have repeatedly engaged in ceasefires and engagements, firing rockets at Israel in recent years.
In particular, following a high-ranking member of an armed group died during a hunger strike in an Israeli prison earlier this month, more than 100 rockets were fired at Israel.
