Tel Aviv: Opposition leader Yair Lapid has asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resign in protest of Israel’s occupation of Palestine and continued bombings. Lapid said Netanyahu should step down immediately and end the regime’s discriminatory treatment of ordinary people in Palestine.
Lapid called for parliament to be prepared for a no-confidence vote that would allow a new government to be formed under a different prime minister. Lapid said they needed a change and that Netanyahu was incapable and unqualified to remain prime minister.
The opposition leader also alleged that the security system led by the prime minister had failed inexcusably to prevent the counter-attack by Hamas on October 7. Lapid made it clear that he cannot continue under a prime minister who has lost the trust of the people.
Following the Hamas counterattack, Netanyahu and another opposition leader, Benny Gantz, announced the formation of an emergency government for the duration of the war. But Lapid, the Israeli opposition leader, rejected the decision.
Instead, Lapid called for national reconstruction by electing another prime minister from Netanyahu’s Likud party. Lapid also pointed out that general elections are not suitable for the current situation.
Aljazeera reported that it was the first time that Lapid had asked for the resignation of the prime minister. Lapid said in a telegram statement that he had approached the Likud party with some proposals at the beginning of the conflict, but the leaders had been evasive. He pointed out that such behavior is shameful.
