The Minister of National Security and the Minister of Finance directly criticize Netanyahu. As the Israeli military withdrew the majority of its ground troops operating in the southern Gaza Strip, extreme right-wing forces within the Israeli coalition government are strongly protesting. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a representative far-right member of Israel’s right-wing coalition government, said on the social media platform “I do not have the authority to continue to maintain it,” he wrote.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is pressured by the international community, including the United States, to withdraw support for the coalition if the ground battle in Rafah, the southernmost city in the Gaza Strip, is considered the last bastion of Hamas.
Another far-right politician in the coalition government, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, also questioned the withdrawal of ground troops deployed to the Gaza Strip and requested the prime minister to convene a security cabinet. “The council that can approve important decisions in war is the security cabinet,” Smotrich said.
But unfortunately, such procedures were not followed,” he criticized.
He continued, “I believe that the decision to withdraw troops from the Gaza Strip, which undermines the momentum of the war and undermines our security interests, was made without the knowledge of all wartime ministers through discussions only with some wartime ministers, under pressure from the international community.” He raised his voice. The two ministers are key figures who helped Netanyahu return to power in December 2022.
If the Devout Zionist Party, a far-right political coalition led by them, withdraws support for the coalition, the Netanyahu government will collapse.
An Israeli military spokesman said the previous day that most of its ground troops, except for one brigade, had been withdrawn from the southern Gaza Strip. However, there was no mention of the background to the withdrawal.
However, Israeli Army Chief of Staff Herzy Halevi said, “(Despite reducing ground forces), the war continues in the Gaza Strip and the end of the war is still far away.”
“We are fighting in a different way than before,” he explained.
Defense Minister Yoav Galland said, “We are taking the troops out (from the Gaza Strip) and preparing for the next mission in Rafah and other places.” There are various speculations linking Israel’s sudden withdrawal of troops, which had insisted on ground combat in Rafah despite pressure from the international community, including the United States, to ceasefire negotiations and response to Iran’s retaliatory attack.
