The Israeli military announced on the 4th (local time) that it had inflicted a significant blow to Hamas control in Khan Younis, the largest city in the southern Gaza Strip.
The Israeli military claimed, “Reservists from the Kiriyati Armored Brigade and the 55th Airborne Brigade operating in the southern Gaza Strip significantly damaged the command and control system of Hamas forces in the northern and eastern regions of Khan Younis.”
At the same time, he assessed, “Hamas units in this region have become unable to carry out large-scale operations.”
The video released by the Israeli military shows the situation following clearing out Hamas members inside an underground tunnel and the arrest of members of Nukba, a Hamas special unit.
“We are encountering terrorists in every house, hospital and school here,” said Colonel Mickey Sharbit, commander of the Kiriyati Armored Brigade. “There are even cases where the enemy is coming out of underground tunnels inside the schools.”
He continued, “We also confirmed an underground tunnel hundreds of meters long and destroyed the entrance,” adding, “We killed regarding 20 Hamas members, including a company commander-level commander, inside the tunnel, and five Nukba members who came out of this tunnel surrendered.”
The Israeli military, which began a full-scale ground war in November of last year, has taken control of most of the northern part of the Gaza Strip and has recently been carrying out intensive operations to eradicate Hamas in the central and southern regions.
