Israeli Intelligence Failure: How Hamas Surprises Israel – A Critical Evaluation

JERUSALEM – How Hamas managed to carry out such a large-scale lightning attack in Israel, which has intelligence agencies like the famous Mossad and Shin Bet, has left the world baffled. The media and experts are evaluating this as a very serious intelligence failure by the Netanyahu government and the military. Criticism is also sharp. In the cabinet meeting to assess the security, the ministers have demanded that the army should give a clear answer.

The fact that hundreds of Hamas fighters were able to infiltrate southern Israel by land, sea, and air, and that more than 3,000 missiles were unexpectedly fired into Israel, confounds those who know Israel’s military capabilities. Hamas has taken hundreds of Israelis hostage, including soldiers. Israel has not faced such a heavy blow in 50 years. It is not clear what happened to the technical prowess and operational capabilities of Israel’s renowned intelligence agencies. The question also arises as to why there has been a failure to take precautions despite intelligence reports that Hamas is preparing for an attack in Gaza. Netanyahu and his cohorts were wrong to think that Hamas was hesitating to attack because it was afraid that Israel’s response would be too severe.

Some have raised the suspicion that Israel has become so focused on dismantling Iran’s nuclear program that it has forgotten everything else. Why did security lapse in the rush to coincide with the great Jewish festival of Simchat Torah and the Sabbath? The Israeli people cannot tolerate the fact that the country had to face such a large-scale attack during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s eagerness to neutralize the opposition and take control of the entire system of power, including the judiciary. Netanyahu is ready to form a national government with the inclusion of opposition leaders. This ‘shock treatment’ of Hamas will lead to a massive change in Israeli politics, even if it survives the crisis together.

Forget everything else and the opposition is with Netanyahu

JERUSALEM – Although Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is blaming the people for the security crisis, the opposition is standing united with him in this war. The corruption cases that hounded Netanyahu, who gained notoriety for insecurity and frequent elections, and the judicial reform that sparked popular anger, were all relegated to the back burner, at least for the time being.

Netanyahu’s opponents are also in talks to forget party differences and form a unity government. Opposition leaders Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz met with Netanyahu during the security meeting.

This is similar to the 1967 war when Likud Party leader Menachem Begin (Prime Minister of Israel from 1977 to 1983) joined then Prime Minister Levi Eshkol’s government.

Lapid also stated in his statement that Netanyahu knows that the current cabinet does not have the capacity to handle a war situation.
