THE Israeli military is confirming the possible death of the leader of the Palestinian Hamas movement, Yahwa Sinwar, in an attack in the Gaza Strip.

“We are examining the possibility that one of the victims was Yahya Sinwar,” the Israeli military said, without providing further details, in a statement on Thursday (17/10/2024).

Israel only said that three Palestinians were killed during a joint operation launched by the military and the Shin Bet security service.

Yahya Sinwar last August was elected by Hamas members as head of the group’s political bureau to replace Ismail Haniyeh who was killed in an attack in Tehran, Iran, on July 31, 2024.

Hamas’ military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, saw Sinwar’s election as proof of the movement’s strength.

Before being selected to lead Hamas’ political bureau, Sinwar was elected head of the movement in the Gaza Strip in 2017 and re-elected in 2021.

Israel considers Sinwar to be the architect of the Al-Aqsa Flood cross-border attack operation on October 7 last year, which caused significant human and military losses to Tel Aviv and damaged the reputation of Israel’s intelligence and security services around the world.

According to Israel, eliminating Sinwar is one of the main objectives of its current war in Gaza. (Anadolu/Ant/P-3)
