Israeli Footage of Hamas Attack: Controversy in the Belgian Parliament

Israeli authorities have compiled footage of the October 7 Hamas attack. Submitted to governments around the world, these images are however not viewed by everyone. This is the case in Belgium where they have not been seen in Parliament.

On October 7, Hamas terrorists struck Israel. Footage of the massacre was compiled into a 43-minute film produced and released by Israeli authorities.

In France, at the National Assembly, these images were seen by deputies this Tuesday, November 14, but the Conference of Presidents (comprising representation from all parties of Parliament, which manages, among other things, the agenda of parliamentary sessions ), in Belgium, decided not to view these images.

Chaired by Eliane Tillieux, this conference collected the opinions of the different political parties represented in the government, but no vote was taken, since this is not part of the conference’s remit.

“Here’s what some participants told us”, announces Martin Buxant at the microphone of Bel RTL morning. Journalists were actually not authorized there, since these weekly sessions are held behind closed doors.

The socialist Eliane Tillieux indicated that she had been contacted by the Israeli ambassador to Belgium to broadcast these images of Hamas from October 7. The PTB representative directly expressed opposition indicating that if these images were shown in Parliament, then images of the massacres in Gaza and Palestine would also have to be shown by “concern for balance”.

Former Minister of Defense André Flahaut (PS), for his part, recalled that the Israeli ambassador had already shown images of the attack during her appearance before the deputies in the Commission.

“NVA representative Peter De Roover followed up by saying that he was in favor of broadcasting these Israeli videos”explains Martin Buxant. “A point of view defended with pugnacity by the deputy Georges Dallemagne of the Engagés.”

So that makes two for, the Flemish ecologists spoke out once morest and the socialist Ahmed Laaouej took the floor to say that there was no consensus on the matter.“, continues the political journalist from RTL info. “The MR and Belang did not take part in the debate since they noted the lack of agreement: there is no point in adding to it.”

Does this mean that these images will definitely never be broadcast in the Belgian Parliament? “The file can come back to the conference of presidents, but there will be no consensus on the matter”selon Martin Buxant. “The subject is incandescent, and the political recovery is 200 days before the elections… The campaign will be long.”
