A doctor at an Israeli field hospital where Palestinians from Gaza are being held has described in detail the horrific conditions there, including how detainees had to have limbs amputated following injuries caused by the way they were handcuffed and forced to defecate in diapers.
The doctor, whose name has not been communicated, works in the Sde Teiman establishment, between Gaza and Bersheeba, in the Negev desert. He recounts his experience in a letter addressed to the Israeli Minister of Defense, the Minister of Health and the government’s legal advisor. The letter was reported by Haaretz on Thursday.
Sde Teiman was established following the outbreak of war last year as a temporary center to detain those accused of participating in the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7.
Many of those arrested have no connection to Hamas and were released following questioning.
He also states that all patients are handcuffed and handcuffed all day, blindfolded and fed through a straw, regardless of their level of danger. Many are forced to defecate in a diaper.
Most patients are hospitalized due to injuries sustained during their arrest and prolonged confinement, having “required repeated surgical interventions,” according to the doctor.
Three sources told Haaretz that last year a detainee had his hand amputated following being injured by prolonged handcuffing.
