UNIFIL stated that Israel was deliberately undermining its position in southern Lebanon. The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon said Israeli troops deliberately damaged one of their towers.
An Israeli army bulldozer reportedly deliberately destroyed the observation tower and guardrail where UNIFIL’s position was located. Even so, UNIFIL ensured that its troops remained in all positions despite the pressure exerted.
“We remind (Israeli troops) and all actors of their obligations to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property and to respect the integrity of UN premises at all times,” said a UNlFIL statement reported by Al Jazeera.
UNIFIL calls on Israel to stop violating the position of UN peacekeepers as it would be considered a violation of international law.
Israel recently claimed that the Lebanese armed group, Hezbollah, attacked Israel from positions located near UN peacekeeping posts in southern Lebanon. However, Hezbollah denied this accusation.
The shooting of the UNIFIL watchtower in southern Lebanon came after the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon was attacked several times previously. Last week, UNIFIL said two Israeli tanks destroyed the main gate at one of its positions in southern Lebanon. (Z-2)
