Meanwhile, Israeli police claimed that hundreds of Palestinians hurled firecrackers and stones at police and entered the mosque to calm the situation. A spokesman for Israeli President Naphtali Bennett said hundreds of Palestinians had been arrested.
Hamas condemned the attack and said Israel would retaliate. Last year, Israeli police brutality in al-Aqsa led to an 11-day standoff between Hamas and Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.
Al-Aqsa is a major center of worship for Muslims around the world. Over the past week, 25 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces for insurgent reasons. Israel has carried out regular raids in the West Bank and arrested hundreds of Palestinians. Unarmed women and children were among those killed.
