The reports of the Israeli attacks came early Sunday morning local time. The flight alert has gone off in northern Israel.
Hezbollah says the movement is attacking Israel with a large number of drones in response to the killing of one of its commanders in Beirut last month.
– We can see that Hezbollah is preparing to launch a large-scale attack against Israel, while putting Lebanese civilians in danger, says Admiral Daniel Hagari, spokesman for the Israeli military.
– Self-defense
– In self-defense to remove these threats, the Israeli military is attacking targets in Lebanon, from where Hezbollah planned to attack Israeli civilians, the spokesperson continues.
No further details have been provided about the intelligence to which he refers.
– We ask civilians who are in the areas where Hezbollah operates to get away immediately for their own safety, says Hagari.
There are images circulating on social media that appear to show attacks on southern Lebanon.
Air traffic stopped
On Sunday morning, Ben Gurion Airport outside Tel Aviv diverted flights that were supposed to land there, and the flights that should have left from there have been put on hold for the time being.
At least two flights from the national company El Al changed direction south after the announcement.
There have recently been fears that the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip will escalate into a regional conflict, after Israel killed a high-ranking Hamas leader in an airstrike and that the country is suspected of being behind the murder of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran.
