Commissioner Thierry Breton, member of the European Commission, which represents the European Union globally, wrote a warning letter aimed at Elon Musk, pointing out how X (former Twitter) is being used to share false information regarding the conflict involving Israel and the terrorist group Hamas.
Breton recalled the businessman’s responsibilities in relation to the Digital Services Law. The letter comes at a time when researchers and fact-checkers are warning regarding a wave of misinformation on the social network. Verified users are reportedly sharing videos that are supposed to be from the ongoing conflict, but are not.

“Following the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas once morest Israel, we have indications that your platform is being used to spread illegal content and disinformation in the EU,” wrote Breton in the letter to Musk. “Let me remind you that the Digital Services Law sets out very precise obligations regarding content moderation.”
There are old images reused from unrelated conflicts or images from games propagated as reality. Breton also suggested that X was not adequately responding to requests to deal with a potentially illegal type of content on the platform.
Musk issued a brief response regarding X. “Our policy is that everything is open source and transparent, an approach I know the EU supports,” he wrote. “Please list the violations you allude to in the X so the public can see them.”
