Israel steps up its attacks, the death toll rises in Gaza

Among those killed on Saturday were the journalist Mohammad Abu Jasser, his wife and two children. They were killed in an attack on the home in the north of the Gaza Strip, hospital sources say.

Two journalists were also among those injured in an attack on a house in the Nuseirat refugee camp, rescue crews say.

According to the authorities in Gaza, over 160 Palestinian journalists and media workers have so far been killed in the war.

In Rafah, the southernmost part of the Gaza Strip, Israeli tanks moved further in and took up positions on a hilltop to the west of the city. There, according to eyewitnesses, they encountered armed resistance from Hamas-led forces.

Dramatic numbers

According to Palestinian health authorities, 71 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours.

At least 38,919 Palestinians have been killed and 89,622 wounded so far in the 288-day war.

This equates to an average of 135 killed and 310 wounded every single day since the Israeli attacks began.

According to the health authorities, the vast majority of victims are children and women.

The information on killed and wounded has not been confirmed by independent sources, but is considered to be credible by the UN and other aid organisations.

Baby saved

On Saturday, doctors at the al-Awda hospital in Gaza were able to make a rare happy message in the middle of the many tragedies.

25-year-old Ola al-Kurd, who was nine months pregnant, was killed in an attack on the Nuseirat refugee camp, and was rushed to the hospital where doctors succeeded in saving the child she was carrying.

One of the doctors at the hospital, Khalil Dajran, confirms that the baby is alive and states that the little boy is now in an incubator at the hospital.

The boy’s father was wounded but survived the Israeli attack.
