The owner of the Israel-Premier Tech racing team has harshly criticized his big earner Chris Froome, who was not considered for the Tour de France. When asked if the four-time Tour de France winner was worth his money, Sylvan Adams answered in an interview with Cycling Weekly: “Absolutely not. We’ve signed Chris to lead our tour team and he’s not even here yet, so you can’t think of it as good value for money.”

If you want to be on this year’s tour team, it doesn’t matter what you did seven years ago.

Froome joined Israel Premier Tech 2021 and is said to earn up to 5 million euros a year there. At the time the contract was signed, the now 38-year-old had recovered from the serious fall he suffered shortly before the 2019 tour. But it was unclear if the Brit would ever return to his former level of performance.

Risk didn’t pay off

“We took a risk, but at least we signed the best Grand Tour driver of this generation,” said billionaire Adams, criticizing: “I respect his achievements in the past, but if you want to be on this year’s Tour team , it doesn’t count what you did seven years ago, but what you did this year. And you have to earn your place.”

Froome had long dominated the Tour de France as a Team Sky rider in the 2010s, in addition to his four titles in France, he also won the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta twice.
