Israel: New bombings in Lebanon – Fierce fighting on the border

According to the agency (ANI in French, NNA in English), it was the most extensive shelling in the area since the exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah on the border in the last year turned into a general conflict a month ago, on the 23 September.

At the same time, the Syrian official news agency SANA spoke early in the morning about the bombing of an “apartment building” in the Kafr Susa district of Damascus, while the NGO Syrian Observatory for Human Rights spoke of “human casualties”.

According to the first information provided by the Syrian Ministry of Defense, at least one soldier was killed and seven others were wounded in Israeli shelling in Damascus, as well as in Homs.

A few hours earlier, the head of US diplomacy, Anthony Blinken, on his eleventh tour of the Middle East since the Israel-Hamas war broke out in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, which has now spread to Lebanon against Hezbollah, urged Israel to avoid escalation with Iran, a supporter of the two Islamist movements.

ANI reported last night that 17 bombings took place in the southern suburbs of Beirut after Israel ordered residents to evacuate urgently from various areas.

Visuals broadcast by AFP show a huge explosion followed by smaller ones.

According to ANI, six properties were razed in Lailaki district alone, while Al Mayadeen TV reported that its office in southern Beirut was hit.

There was no warning of the shelling in the Jna district.

This latest bombing killed one person and wounded five others, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.

Yesterday morning, Israel’s army bombarded Tyre, in southern Lebanon, sending some of the residents of the coastal city, with its rich Phoenician and Roman archaeological heritage, fleeing, where the streets were deserted.

“The whole city shook,” recounted Rana, a resident who did not want to give her last name, when the shelling was unleashed “in the heart of Tyre.”

Mr Blinken made his new tour of the region about a month after the war in the Gaza Strip spread to Lebanon and while all international mediation efforts have so far failed.

Yesterday Wednesday, Mr Blinken said the “time” had come to end the war in the Gaza Strip, which was triggered by an unprecedented incursion by Hamas’ military arm into southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

For the US Secretary of State, Israel has achieved “most of its strategic objectives” in the Palestinian enclave, in particular to “ensure that there is never another October 7th”.

After the Hamas raid, Israel vowed to wipe out the Palestinian Islamist movement, in power in the Gaza Strip since 2007.

The day before Tuesday, the head of the State Department estimated that the death of Yahya Shinwar, the leader of Hamas, by Israeli military fire on October 16, offers “an opportunity for the hostages to return to their homes” and for “the war to end.”

However, a source in Israel’s security forces who spoke to the press on condition of anonymity said the Israeli army was ready for “months of fighting” in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. Israel, the source added, is not waging a “war against Gaza, nor a war against Lebanon,” but “a war against Iran, sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly, with Iran’s allies.”

Mr Blinken considers it “very important that Israel retaliates in a way that does not lead to further escalation”, as Iran has warned that it will retaliate in the event of Israeli retaliation to the Islamic Republic’s firing of 200 rockets into Israeli territory on 1 October.

In the Gaza Strip, the World Health Organization has postponed a polio vaccination campaign that was due to begin in its north, as the Israeli armed forces continue a new offensive against Hamas that began on October 6.

Large-scale Israeli military operations in retaliation for the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas have claimed the lives of at least 42,792 Palestinians, the majority of them civilians, according to data from the Palestinian Islamist movement’s health ministry, which is deemed reliable by the UN.

The war has forced almost all the inhabitants of the enclave (2.4 million) to leave their homes, who are preparing to live a second winter with increasingly extreme shortages, under siege and bombardment.

“We didn’t expect to live through another winter of war,” Saleh Abu al-Jabin, 32, commented yesterday in the overcrowded Nuseirat refugee camp in the central part of the small enclave.

“We need to replace the tent cloths, they were damaged by the sun in the summer” and “we will also need blankets and clothes,” he added.

Hamas’ raid on southern Israel has killed 1,206 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official data, which includes hostages killed in captivity or already dead when taken to Gaza.

Of the 251 people abducted, 97 are believed to remain hostages in the Gaza Strip, but 34 of the latter have been declared dead by the Israeli army.

In Lebanon, the Israeli armed forces yesterday continued the ground operations in the south that began on September 30. Hezbollah confirmed that it had prevented another invasion.

Israel says it wants Hezbollah to be neutralized in southern Lebanon, bordering its own territory, to allow the safe return of some 60,000 residents forced from their homes by incessant rocket fire by the Shiite militants since the 8th. October.

Hezbollah said yesterday it had fired rockets at a military base and an industrial facility near Tel Aviv, a major city in central Israel, as well as targeting two other military bases near Haifa in the north.

The movement also yesterday confirmed the death in an Israeli bombardment of Hashem Safieddin, who was said to be preparing to succeed Hassan Nasrallah, after the death of Hezbollah’s secretary general in a strike in southern Beirut on September 27.

At least 1,552 people have been killed in Lebanon since Israeli bombardment intensified on September 23, according to an AFP tally based on official data. The UN counts around 800,000 displaced people.

Lebanon is “on the brink of collapse”, German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock warned in Beirut yesterday, promising that her government would provide an additional 60 million euros in humanitarian aid.
