Israel-Lebanon Border Conflict: Israeli Army on High Alert Ahead of Nasrallah’s Speech

The Israeli army said on Friday that an anti-tank shell fired at Israeli forces on the Lebanese border did not reach its target, while the forces were placed on a high level of alert, ahead of an expected speech by Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah.

The Israeli army stated that there were no casualties as a result of the shell, but it responded with artillery to the source of the fire.

In press statements, Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said on Friday that army forces had been placed on a “very high level of alert” on the Lebanese border.

Hagari added that there is a very high degree of readiness to respond to any event today or in the coming days.

He confirmed that the Israeli army launched a massive attack on Hezbollah cells “in response to the shooting in Kiryat Shmona and Safed.”

Hezbollah is clashing with Israeli forces on the border, where 55 of its fighters were killed in an escalation that witnessed the largest death toll among the group since its war with Israel in 2006.

Hezbollah said it carried out 19 simultaneous attacks on Israeli army positions on Thursday, using two explosive drones, in what appears to be the group’s largest attack so far in the nearly four-week conflict.

Israel responded by launching air strikes accompanied by tank and artillery fire as fighting escalated on the border.

But with most of the clashes so far limited to the border area, Hezbollah has relied on a fraction of the firepower with which Nasrallah has threatened Israel for years.

Many in Lebanon and Israel are awaiting the speech that Nasrallah will deliver, amid fears for weeks that the current conflict will spill over into Lebanon.
