Israel is ‘currently’ barred from playing in the ice hockey championships

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) on Thursday Israel prevented from participating in the world championships.

The move was taken to ensure the ‘safety and welfare’ of all participants, including Israeli citizens.

“The IIHF Council took this decision based on careful deliberation and risk assessment, discussions with participating countries and hosts,” the federation said in a statement.

The IIHF says Israel ‘will stay out for now.’

The Israeli men’s team was scheduled to play in the Division Two A World Championship tournament in Serbia in April against various teams, including Australia and the United Arab Emirates.

The Israeli Ice Hockey Association said it would file a protest with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the IIHF’s decision.

“The discriminatory decision to exclude Israel is an extraordinary and extremely serious move that does not meet any international sporting standards and is completely against the Olympic values,” said a statement issued by the Israeli embassy in Paris.

This move by the international federation came at a time when Israel is engaged in attacks in the Gaza Strip.
