Israel Galvan: Radio Concert

For the first time, the ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival will be a Alex Reed at the RadioKulturhaus with a performance by the Spanish flamenco dancer and choreographer Israel Galván.

Who is capable of reformulating flamenco, mixing it with elements from cross-dressing, bullfighting and all sorts of rituals from popular culture to soccer, and bringing it into the 21st century? That’s in front of everyone else Israel Galvanoutstanding contemporary bailaor that surpasses pretty much everything that corresponds to good traditional folklore.
This means not only the hot sole on the wooden “tablao” (floor) of flamenco, but a rediscovery of the possibilities of this exciting Andalusian dance. Back in 2016, Galván demonstrated what that means in FLA.CO.MEN at ImPulsTanz. Now the multiple award-winning star, who took part in the Kassel documenta 14 in 2017, is coming back to Vienna, where he will implement a very special project: a radio concert. He always wanted to record his dance for a music CD, says Galván. Now this wish has come true at ImPulsTanz in the ORF Radiokulturhaus. A percussive feast for dance and music aficionados is guaranteed!

Born in Seville, Spain, into the family of dancers of José Galván and Eugenia de los Reyes, Israel Galván received a classical flamenco education, but since his first creation ¡Mira! / Los zapatos rojos (1998), which paved the way for a manifesto for a new spirit of flamenco dance, he has gradually morphed into an unclassified dancer and choreographer. Galván recodes the body language of flamenco, using not only expressions that are genealogically close to it, such as bullfighting, but also performative aspects of other rituals in popular culture, from football to activism to cross-dressing. He produces a multitude of bodies for a flamenco that is itself in a process of change. Each of his creations aims to be a milestone in his quest for a dance that wants to break free from certain characteristics of a crystallized flamenco. He wants to focus the dance back on the actual act of dancing.
Israel Galván has received the most prestigious awards such as the Premio Nacional de Danza (Spain), the New York Bessie Performance Award and the National Dance Award for Exceptional Artistry (Great Britain). In 2016, he was promoted to the rank of Officier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France. Israel Galván also stars in a Netflix docu-series regarding dance called Move. He is an Associate Artist at Le Théâtre de la Ville in Paris.
