Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was publicly challenged today by Defense Minister Yoav Gallad over his post-war plans for the Gaza Strip.

In a televised press conference, the Israeli defense minister underlined his opposition to a long-term military control of the Palestinian enclave by Israel. Gallant said that, since the beginning of the war sparked by the unprecedented attack by Hamas on October 7, he had tried to advance a plan for post-war Palestinian governance of Gaza. But his efforts “did not go unanswered” at several war council meetings under Netanyahu, said Galland – who hails from the Israeli prime minister’s Likud party.

“I call on the prime minister to announce that Israel will not put Gaza under military control,” Gallant said. There must be an alternative to Hamas rule… Indecision will undermine military gains,” he stressed.

Prime Minister Netanyahu avoided responding directly to Gallad and said any discussion of a proposal for post-war governance of the Gaza Strip without Hamas presupposes the elimination of the Palestinian Islamist movement. He also underlined that the achievement of this goal must be pursued “without excuses”.
