About 1,200 people in Israel were killed in the attack, not 1,400 as previously thought, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lior Haiat said on Friday. Many of the initially unidentified bodies found following the attack were apparently those of Hamas fighters, said Haiat.
According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), an explosion at Shifa Hospital in the Gaza Strip was caused by a rocket fired by extremist groups from within the Palestinian territory. The target of the rocket was Israeli soldiers on a mission in the area. According to the radical Islamic group Hamas, 13 people were killed and dozens injured in the explosion.
“About 50 dead following school is shelled”
According to its director, “around 50 dead people” were brought to the hospital following a school was shelled. The AFP news agency was initially unable to verify the information. For its part, the media office of the government in the Gaza Strip, which is dominated by the radical Islamic group Hamas, said that Israel had “positioned many tanks regarding 200 meters away from the Al-Burak school.” In addition, four hospitals have been surrounded in the Al-Nasr district, where the school is located.
The Israeli army reported heavy fighting near Al-Shifa hospital on Thursday, saying it had killed “more than 50 terrorists” and destroyed tunnel entrances, anti-tank missile workshops and air defense positions. The military announced on Friday that those involved in the massacre in Israel were among the terrorists killed. Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of using Al-Shifa Hospital in particular as a hideout for its fighters and to coordinate their attacks, something the Palestinian organization denies.
Middle East: 101 UN aid workers killed since war began
Meanwhile, 101 staff at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNWRA) have been killed since the Middle East conflict flared up. UNWRA chief Philippe Lazzarini announced this on Friday via the short message service X (formerly Twitter). “Devastating. Over 100 UNRWA staff were killed in one month. Parents, teachers, nurses, doctors, support staff. UNRWA is mourning, the Palestinians are mourning, the Israelis are mourning.”
He once more called for a humanitarian ceasefire. United Nations officials are planning a moment of silence on Monday to remember those killed. Never before have so many UN aid workers been killed in a conflict. In 2011, there were 46 in Nigeria when a suicide bomber targeted an office in Abuja.
100,000 people left the Gaza Strip
According to Israeli figures, more than 100,000 residents left the north of the Gaza Strip for the south in the past two days. In the northern part of the Palestinian territory lies the city of Gaza, into which the Israeli army has advanced extensively, says a military spokesman. Israel has called on the population to evacuate the north.
According to the Israeli military, two soldiers were injured in a drone attack from Lebanon. The army announced on Friday that a total of three missiles had entered Israeli territory. One drone was intercepted and two others fell in an area in the north. The Lebanese Hezbollah militia claimed the attack with “three attack drones”.

The Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip are a response to the brutal major attack by Hamas on Israel more than a month ago. Hundreds of Islamists entered Israel on October 7 and committed atrocities once morest hundreds of civilians, including many women and children. According to Israeli information, around 1,200 people were killed and around 240 people were abducted to the Gaza Strip.
10,800 people are said to have already been killed
Israel then declared war on Hamas and has been attacking targets in the Gaza Strip ever since. Meanwhile, Israeli soldiers on the ground advanced into the city of Gaza. According to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health, which cannot be independently verified, more than 10,800 people have been killed in the attacks so far.
According to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s military should have control of the Gaza Strip following the war. The Israeli army will “retain control of the strip, we will not hand it over to international forces,” Netanyahu said, according to media reports, on Friday at a meeting with representatives of Israeli border towns.
Netanyahu had previously told US broadcaster Fox News in an interview that Israel did not want to try to conquer, rule or occupy the Gaza Strip. “But we want to give him and ourselves a better future in the entire Middle East. And for that to happen, Hamas must be defeated.” Netanyahu said he had not set a timetable “because it may take more time.” The Gaza Strip must be demilitarized, de-radicalized and rebuilt.
Israel does not appear to be seeking a sustained occupation
A senior adviser to Netanyahu said last week that Israel does not seek continued occupation of the area. But there must be an Israeli security presence so that the military can go in for operations depending on the threat, Mark Regev told the US broadcaster CNN.
The Palestinian Authority is now prepared to assume government responsibility in the Gaza Strip following the end of the war, subject to certain conditions. The prerequisite is a comprehensive political solution that also includes the West Bank and East Jerusalem, said Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday.
Two-state solution is rejected
The autonomous authority was driven out of the Gaza Strip by Hamas in 2007. Since then, it has ruled to a limited extent in the West Bank, which is partly occupied by Israel and where Israel has expanded its settlements despite international criticism.
However, a two-state solution is viewed by most members of the current right-wing religious government in Israel as a danger to the Jewish state and is therefore rejected. There are also far-right ministers who want to annex the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
After the Hamas massacre, Israel wants to destroy its rule and military capabilities. The US is insisting that the PA be involved in discussions regarding the future of the Gaza Strip followingwards. However, large parts of the Palestinian population are demanding Abbas’ resignation. The 87-year-old has been in office for more than 18 years and is no longer legitimized by elections. If his autonomous authority were to take control of the Gaza Strip with the help of Israel, it would be an affront to many.
