One of the most important leaders of the radical Islamic Hamas, Marwan Issa, was said to have been killed two weeks ago. According to the Israeli army, the terrorist died in an air force attack in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli army confirmed the death of a senior leader of the radical Islamic group Hamas on Tuesday. Marwan Issa, the “number two” of the Essedin al-Kassam Brigades, was killed in an Israeli Air Force attack in the Gaza Strip two weeks ago, army spokesman Daniel Hagari told reporters. The attack was carried out on the basis of information from the Israeli domestic secret service Shin Bet.

Issa was “one of the organizers of the massacre on October 7th,” Hagari continued. He is the highest-ranking Hamas official killed since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas.

On Tuesday evening, Hamas office representative Issat al-Rishk said he had “no confidence” in Israeli statements regarding Issa’s death – but without providing evidence that he was still alive. Last week, the USA announced that the number three leader of the Islamist militant Palestinian organization Hamas, Marwan Issa, had been killed in an Israeli military operation.

Israel has “dismantled a significant number of Hamas battalions” and killed thousands of the Islamist organization’s fighters, including senior commanders, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters at the time. The remaining Hamas leadership “is hiding, probably deep in the Hamas tunnel network, and justice will come for them too.”

Issa was the deputy of Mohammed Deif, who heads Hamas’ armed wing, the Essedin al-Qassam Brigades, Hagari said at the time. However, he stated at the time that it was still unclear whether Issa was killed in the operation.

Deif, along with Jahja Sinwar, is considered to be the mastermind of the unprecedented Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th, in which, according to Israeli information, around 1,160 people were killed and around 250 others were kidnapped as hostages in the Gaza Strip.

In response to the attack, Israel has since taken massive military action in the Gaza Strip, with the declared aim of destroying Hamas. According to Hamas figures, which cannot be independently verified, more than 32,300 people have been killed in the Palestinian territory since then.
