Israel attacked a building in the southern Gaza Strip occupied by United Nations (UN) personnel, the Organization said on Monday. The information could not be independently verified.

The attack occurred in the vicinity of the Rafah crossing point and is new evidence”that no place is safe in Gaza, neither in the north, nor in the center, nor in the south“, explains the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Organization for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini.

UNRWA says it has already informed the warring parties twice that the building housed UN personnel. According to UNRWA, four workers were in the building and left shortly before the attack. No Palestinian displaced persons were in the building, the UN organization further specifies.

More than 1.5 million people have been displaced as a result of the clashes in the Gaza Strip, according to UN figures, including more than 60 in the last week alone, according to UNRWA. UN buildings were directly or indirectly damaged. Most of them are schools which are now being used as emergency shelters. More than 600,000 people have found refuge in the south of the Gaza Strip.
