The Israeli Air Force has attacked targets of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. As the Israeli military reported on Thursday night, warplanes hit Shiite militia infrastructure on Lebanese soil. Hezbollah said at least five of its members were killed in the attack. Among them is the son of the chairman of Hezbollah’s parliamentary bloc in the Lebanese parliament, Mohamed Raad.

According to Lebanese security sources, they were members of Hezbollah’s elite brigade, Al Radwan. Accordingly, a house in the village of Beit Yahoun in southern Lebanon was hit.

There are concerns that the Gaza war between Israel and the Islamist Hamas might spread to Lebanon. Hezbollah has ties to Hamas, but is considered more influential and significantly more powerful. It is also considered Iran’s most important non-state ally and is part of the self-proclaimed “Resistance Axis”, a front of militias with the aim of fighting Iran’s arch-enemy Israel. Since the outbreak of the Gaza war, there have been repeated violent incidents on the border between Israel and Lebanon, with deaths on both sides.

Israel’s military said on Thursday night that troops and warplanes had attacked a “terror cell” that had tried to fire rockets into Israeli territory. A “terror cell” that fired on troops was also hit.
