MORE than 10 people were killed in an Israeli attack on a makeshift refugee camp at a school in Gaza City, Palestinian Civil Defense representative in Gaza Mahmoud Basal said on Thursday (1/8).
“The massacre carried out by the Israeli security forces has happened again today. Some time ago, one of the schools in the Shejaiya area, where many families live, was attacked today, 10 bodies have been taken to the hospital,” Basal told reporters.
He said dozens of people were still buried under the rubble. The airstrike was prompted by intelligence indicating that the Palestinian resistance group Hamas was using the school compound to plan attacks on Israel, the Israeli army (IDF) claimed.
“Based on IDF and ISA (Israel security agency) intelligence, the IAF (Israel air force) attacked extremists operating inside the Dalal School compound in the Shejaiya area of Gaza City. The compound was used by Hamas as a hideout for commanders and operators and to plan terror attacks,” the IDF said.
“A number of measures were taken prior to the attack to minimize the number of civilian casualties,” the IDF said on its Telegram account.
Earlier on October 7, 2023, Israel faced an unprecedented rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. At that time, Hamas fighters infiltrated border areas, opened fire on military and civilians, and took more than 200 hostages.

According to authorities, around 1,200 people were killed during the attacks. The IDF responded by launching Operation Iron Sword in the Gaza Strip, which included attacks on civilian targets.
Israel also ordered a total siege of the enclave and cut off access to water, electricity, fuel, food and medicine supplies.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the death toll from Israeli attacks on Gaza since Oct. 7 has exceeded 39,400 and more than 91,100 others have been injured. (Ant/Z-2)
