THE thriller film Bangsal Isolation by Director Adhe Dharmastriya is ready to present a different story from the perspective of a women’s prison in Indonesia and will be showing in cinemas starting July 25, 2024.

“The Isolation Ward is related to the prison. Here, Weni as the main character, enters the prison to find out regarding her sister’s unnatural death,” said the director of the Isolation Ward, Adhe Dharmastriya, in a special interview session, quoted Friday (12/7).

Broadly speaking, Bangsal Isolation tells the story of a journalist named Weni (Kimberly Rider) who goes undercover as a prisoner in a women’s prison. There, Weni has a mission to uncover the truth behind her sister’s unnatural death in the prison.

“She (Weni) found everything there, and Bella (played by Wulan Guritno) who turned out to be the ruling thug in prison, until finally Weni found something unnatural there,” said Adhe.

Different from his previous works, Bangsal Isolation is Adhe’s first thriller genre film.

Interestingly, the film tells a story regarding a women-only prison that has not been worked on by many other local filmmakers.

The film Bangsal Isolation is another perspective behind the prison that has often been dominated by men. This film highlights the harsh life of women behind bars.

Therefore, Adhe is willing to work on the film Bangsal Isolation. Through this film, Adhe wants Indonesian society to be more open in seeing the current social situation, including the conditions behind prisons that are not widely revealed to the public.

“I worked on this film because the theme is bold, different from the others,” said Adhe.

“Why did I choose the theme of women? Because I want to empower and show that women’s emancipation can also be equal to men,” she continued.

Uniquely, Adhe and the team used Van Der Wick Fort, a historic fort built around the early 19th century, as the filming location for Isolation Ward.

Fortunately, Adhe and the team were able to change the atmosphere in the fort like a prison to align it with the story script.

“In this film, we had to dress up Van Der Wick Fortress as a prison, so I had quite a hard time doing it,” said Adhe.

Adhe hopes that following being screened in Indonesian cinemas, Bangsal Isolation can also be included in national and international film festivals.

“I really want to, I want to introduce local filmmakers who also have diverse stories,” he concluded.

The thriller film Isolation Ward stars Wulan Guritno, Kimberly Rider, Ibrahim Risyad, and a number of other Indonesian actors and actresses.

Isolation Ward will be shown starting July 25, 2024 in cinemas throughout Indonesia. (Ant/Z-1)
