Iran’s envoy to the United Nations (UN) Amir Saeed Iravani emphasized, Wednesday (31/7), that his country will avenge the killing of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran when it is deemed necessary and appropriate.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has the inherent right of self-defense in accordance with international law to respond decisively to these terrorist and criminal acts when deemed necessary and appropriate,” Iravani told the UN Security Council. Iravani called Haniyeh’s death, “The result of aggressive acts of terrorism by the Israeli Zionist occupation regime.”

He described the attack as a continuation of Israel’s terrorist and sabotage activities in the region. He said he strongly condemned the attack. Iravani also reiterated Iran’s commitment to upholding international law and the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.

Peace in the region can only be achieved by respecting these principles. He accused Israel of adopting an aggressive stance against all countries in the region. Iravani said, “The leaders of this (Israeli) regime who are rude and belligerent,” do not respect the basic principles of international law. The US, he said, also bears responsibility because it is a strategic ally and a major supporter of the Israeli regime.

He urged the international community and the UN Security Council not to remain silent in the face of such heinous crimes. “For almost 10 months, certain countries, especially the US, have shielded Israel from any responsibility for the massacre in Gaza and its evil activities in the region,” he said.

He accused these countries of not only obstructing the Palestinian right to legitimate self-defense but also trying to legitimize Israel’s massacre and genocide against the Palestinian people leading to a misinterpretation of the concept of self-defense.

Iravani urged the Security Council to take immediate action to hold Israel accountable for the attack, including sanctions and other measures to deter the Zionist regime from continuing to launch dangerous attacks.

Feda Abdelhady, Palestine’s deputy ambassador to the UN, said Palestinian civilians are experiencing increasing fear, suffering and loss every day due to the Israeli occupation force.

Abdelhady stressed that Palestinian leaders strongly condemned the assassination of Haniyeh and that a state of mourning had been declared in Palestine.

He said Israel prefers, “Violence and terror,” over respect for international law, diplomacy and human life.

The Palestinian envoy said no child, woman, man or baby can escape targeting by the Israeli occupation army and Israeli settler militias.

He recalled that Israeli officials were confident that they would not be punished for the crimes they committed.

Abdelhady urged the international community to face up to the reality and end these crimes and attacks.

“Israel has no right to claim justification for these war crimes and crimes against humanity,” he said.

Hadi Hachem, Charge d’Affaires of Lebanon’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, said the Lebanese government and people do not want war. “Lebanon is fully committed to resolution 1701,” he added.

Hachem warned, “The present is bitter. The future is bleak and what started in the Middle East will spread throughout the world.” (Ant/Z-2)
