Born in 1963 in a Gaza refugee camp, he joined Hamas from its founding in the first Intifada (Uprising) against Israel in 1987. He had just graduated from Gaza University, where he joined the Muslim Brotherhood.

He was imprisoned several times, went into self-exile, became prime minister of the Palestinian Authority in 2006 for a few months when Hamas defeated Arafat’s Fatah in elections before the Palestinian civil war broke out.
In 2017, he succeeded Khaled Mesaal in the leadership of the political office of the terrorist organization, for Israel, the USA and the EU. Maybe Messal will take the reins again.
He has played a key role in de-escalation negotiations and cease-fire efforts in Gaza in recent months. In April his 3 sons and grandsons were murdered in Gaza. “It is an honor to witness. We are not afraid of murders,” he said then.
