This is her first time in the Canary Islands and she has captivated the audience of the archipelago with her theatrical work ‘Darwin’s Smile’, a humorous monologue where she pours out her love for animals and science while reflecting on the behaviors of both animals and humans.
Isabella Rossellini has scheduled three performances in the islands, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, where the audience has embraced her new facet, allowing themselves to be surprised by the actress.
“At first, it seemed to me that people were surprised because they are not used to seeing me in a comedic role, but at the end of the play, it was very rewarding to receive a great applause from a devoted audience,” Isabella Rossellini confesses to us, with whom we were able to chat hours before her final performance as part of the ‘Festival Veranos del Taoro.’ It will take place on a very particular stage, in the Taoro Park and the Laurel de Indias, an outdoor theater that breathes love for nature.
This is not the first time we have seen Rossellini in a role like this. In fact, her career changed when at 42, the brand Lancome, of which she was a muse for years, fired her. Job opportunities for women her age began to dwindle and she decided to go back to university. “I started studying ethology, the science that analyzes animal behavior, something that had always intrigued me.”
Now she is projecting everything she learned onto the theater stage with works like this, ‘Darwin’s Smile’ or ‘Link Link Circus‘, a monologue also inspired by the animal world where, through scientific data, she discusses the evolution of animals that have been in contact with humans.
After that dismissal, her life took a radical turn, going from being a fashion and film icon to a farmer alongside her children on a farm near New York. 21 years later, the same brand that fired her called her to return to work with them.
“I was already 63 years old, and for me, it was a pleasant surprise and a huge improvement for the lives of women because I understood that fashion and beauty could also be a form of fun for women my age. And this has only been possible because now there are women working in executive positions at those companies that make perfumes or fashion in general,” Rossellini acknowledges.
The actress of Italian origin strolled this morning around the surroundings of Taoro Park, where various activities programmed as part of the festival will take place over the coming days, and there she had the opportunity to plant a palm tree that bears her name.
A privileged natural environment where Rossellini assures she has been able to enjoy and be surprised in equal measure: “It’s incredible to see how the trees sprout in such a short time after a severe fire, and yesterday I was very surprised to see the wild nature of Lanzarote where the rocks and vegetation have the same color.”
Veranos del Taoro is a theatrical festival that takes advantage of the exceptional climatic conditions of an island of eternal spring. Throughout its three editions, great names from national and international dramaturgy have graced the outdoor stage of the Parque de la Sortija in the municipality of Puerto de la Cruz.
The idea behind this event is to embrace the tradition of important theatrical events such as the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in London or Shakespeare in the Park in New York, where, despite being completely outdoors, the theater has dressing rooms for the technical and artistic crew or the makeup department.
