Isaac in the engine room: EA Motive showed 4 minutes of new Dead Space remake gameplay

Studio EA Motive hosted an hour-long live broadcast with a new in-depth look at the technical part of the remake Dead Space.

The developers discussed and showed, using the example of the current pre-alpha, various aspects of the visual component of the updated game, including demonstrated almost four minutes of gameplay with passing the level in the engine room.

The authors noted that the presented segment is still under development, but is already close to the expected quality level of the remake..

Creating an Immersive Environment

“In this segment, the developers will show how the team uses the latest tools, pipelines, and techniques to bring the game’s environment art to new heights, as well as showcase the difference between the old scene and the current version in an unfinished state.”

Improvement of visual effects

“In this segment, the lead VFX artist will talk about the team’s environmental visual effects, including zero gravity, pyrotechnics, and interactive fog and smoke. The original Dead Space used a muted color palette to help players immerse themselves in the reality of the horror that takes place on the Ishimura ship. The remake will stay true to this design choice, while further refining and enhancing it using modern technology. Even the smallest details, from flying sparks to water droplets, can help tell a story and make the environment feel more alive.”

Improving the quality of character models

“In this segment, the lead character artist talks about how the team stayed true to the iconic elements of Isaac’s engineering suit, retaining the functional, utilitarian look of the original and refining the suit’s layering and detailing to make it look its best on modern systems.

Next, we’ll take a closer look at the Necromorph Flesh Tearer. The team focused on both updating the overall design and how this enemy would look when dismembered by the player. Watch the Flesh Tearer go from completely unscathed to horrendous damage to total annihilation.”

Improving Lighting Effects

“In this segment, the developers talk about the three main elements of the lighting update in the Dead Space remake. See how the team improved and reimagined the unique and iconic lamps from the original game to show more depth and detail and even the inner workings of the light bulbs. Then you will see how the effects real-time lighting allows artists to improve the realization of the vision behind the concept art.You will get an idea of everything from the pale flicker of lights in the corridors to the deep blood-red quarantine lighting and how they enhance the atmosphere of Ishimura. Finally, you will learn how the team uses realistic volumetric fog to give the level an atmosphere that enhances the feeling of survival horror.”
