Many of us are intuitively convinced that traveling by train is less polluting but more expensive than by plane. The first part of the statement is incontestably true, because it is documented: CO2 emissions from trains are very significantly lower than those from planes. To what extent? Not all comparisons provide the same result, for various reasons: aircraft consumption varies depending on the type of flight and aircraft, the most recent being more economical and therefore emitting less CO2; train emissions must be modulated depending on whether they are powered by diesel or electricity and, in the latter case, depending on whether the electricity is of renewable, nuclear or fossil origin.
