Is the ‘And Just Like That…’ Reboot Living Up to the Legacy of ‘Sex and the City’?

2023-08-23 11:35:24

In the 1990s, Sex and the City revolutionized the small screen. Can we say the same with the reboot And Just Like That… in 2023? Not sure… Those who know me well (even those who don’t know me well) know that I’ve been a big fan of the series since the beginning. Yet when I saw the reboot’s first season, my blood boiled, especially following noticing all the changes it entailed: no Samantha Jones on the horizon, high fashion color (but low in style)… Despite everything, as an unconditional fan, I mightn’t help but watch the second season which, in my opinion, is a little more successful than the first. Does that mean thatAnd Just Like That… deserves a third, as just announced by the showrunner Michael Patrick King ? Explanations.

5 Life Lessons We Learned From ‘Sex and the City’

Fashion, sex, romantic relationships… Vogue looks back on these things we’ve learned over the years, alongside Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte, the four cult New Yorkers of the Nineties.

A plot still (a little) weak

In 2023, it is no longer really trendy to make series and sitcoms made up of 25-minute episodes like all the (best) ones of the 1990s, like Friends, The prince of Bel-Airand of course Sex and the City. In the original series, Carrie Bradshaw is the narrator, and each episode is structured around writing her sexuality column for the fictional newspaper, The New York Star.

And Just Like That…

In this logic, each episode tells a precise story relating to each of the characters, from the journalist to the somewhat naive gallerist in search of love, Charlotte, passing by the independent and cynical lawyer, Miranda, and the man-eating press, Samantha. And the comic dimension is strongly present there, which might almost be related Sex and the City to a sitcom. In Sex and the City, life comes down to spending your days at restaurants, drinking Cosmopolitans, shopping and above all, talking regarding all your problems relating to the male sex. And this, always with a revolutionary aspect via the subjects treated. The same cannot be said of And Just Like That…

Logical sequence but in many cases different from Sex and the City which was a real revolution in the television world of the 1990s, And Just Like That… follows the adventures of Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) with an irreverent look at sex, love and friendship in the Big Apple, following fifty years. Leaving for London following an argument with Carrie, Samantha is no longer part of the gang. Sometimes appreciated by some, sometimes refuted by others, the reboot of Sex and the City has been dividing fans since the very first episode.

First of all, the episodes are no longer determined by hilarious sex stories, but “cut” like any other B series. On the other hand, the daring comic dimension so appreciated in the original series has given way to somewhat heavy scenes that lack elegance bordering on unease, especially in the first season. The best example remains the scene where Carrie, in full date, starts vomiting absolutely all over the street in front of the restaurant (we’ll spare you the details). What is the point ? We still wonder.

“Sex and the City”: why Carrie should have ended up with Aidan?

Alexandre Marain

This is the biggest question that remains.

Are Aidan and Samantha’s returns too much?

The showrunner of the series managed to do the unthinkable: a second season even more flat and meaningless than the first. Quite simply because there is not much going on there that is interesting and revolutionary. And the plot might have been interesting: Miranda turns red once more, leaves Che Diaz and gets an internship at Human Rights Watch, Charlotte returns to her first love and works in a gallery, Seema meets a handsome rich stallion like Croesus, Lisa becomes pregnant, while Carrie gets back together with Aidan. But all this is overshadowed by rather laughable moments of unbridled madness: Charlotte and Lisa lust following a student from their children’s school, Seema is dating a man who uses a penis pump… And so on! The only positive point is finding the sexy, sweet carpenter with a charming smile: Aidan Shaw, Carrie’s boyfriend.

But Aidan arrives only too long following the start of season 2, in episode 7, pushing his character and his affair with Carrie into the background. A disappointment for fans of the series since the trailer announced quite the opposite. However, this is a clever maneuver on the part of Michael Patrick King which upsets the the state in which of the series just when a jolt is needed. That’s not all since another key character of the series is regarding to make a comeback (or almost) in the last episode of the season, which will be broadcast this Thursday on HBO Max. Information that had leaked to the chagrin of the actors and the director, but later confirmed by the main interested party, Kim Cattrall. When it was announced, during season 1 of the reboot of Sex and the Citywhat Kim Cattrall would not be in the cast, the fans of the first hour were disappointed to say the least.

Everyone agreed that Samantha Jones, with her uninhibited humor and scathing lines, made this cult program vibrate for six seasons and two films. About the reboot, she confessed, a few months following the broadcast of the first season ofAnd Just Like That… : “I was never asked to participate. I had already clarified my point of view regarding the possibility of a third film. Everything in me said: ‘It’s over’”. To celebrate 25 years of Sex and the City, exceptionally, the now 67-year-old actress will make her big comeback during a telephone conversation with Carrie Bradshaw. Admittedly, this return is extremely satisfying, but given the quality of the series And Just Like That… when you compare it to its predecessor, you can’t help but fear the worst.

HBO Max announced the renewal of the series, with a third season: “We are delighted to see that since the launch of the second season, ‘And Just Like That…’ is Max’s most-watched original series to date. day,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of original content for Max. “As we approach the highly anticipated end of the season on Thursday, we raise our cosmos to Michael Patrick King and his magnificent team of writers, producers, actors and technicians who continue to charm us, 25 years later. late, with vibrant friendships and gripping stories. We can’t wait to see where the third season takes our favorite New Yorkers.” It is sure thatAnd Just Like That… will never experience the same radiance as Sex and the City. The era is different, and so is society and the television climate. Despite everything, I think that the series deserves to be pushed further, and I hope that the next adventures of the New-Yorakise and her friends will be a little more convincing. Who knows, maybe Samantha will come back in the long run to spice it all up?
