Is the AI capable of detecting neurological problems?

Parkinson’s disease: the new MIT device

Researchers from MIT or Massachusetts Institute of Technology have created a very precise tool to detect signs or symptoms of Parkinson disease during sleep. More specifically, it is an artificial intelligence or AI that studies the respiratory motility of patients to identify tremors, abnormal signs and many others. These signals unfortunately indicate the syndrome of the neurological degeneration, cognitive and nervous system disorders related to Parkinson’s disease. Indeed, the apparent symptoms of the latter are:

Tremor of the person at rest;

Slow gestures AND abnormal movements;

The person HAS muscle stiffness.

Patients with Parkinson’s disease or Parkinson’s disease must have at least two of these syndromes. To date, there is no cure, only solutions to improve the quality of brain life for these people.

Artificial intelligence: detecting neurological problems during sleep

The advantage ofIA is therefore to be able to formally detect Parkinson’s disease more easily than by identifying the various symptoms. In addition, the mechanism of detection of the device in the form of a package is quite simple. Just hang it on the wall of the individual’s room. And the latter does not need to interact with the device. It calculates the respiratory activity of the individual then the data is returned to theIA so that she can analyze them. Then, the measurement of respiratory functions can be done in two ways. The first is the analysis of radio signals that bounce off the person. And the second is from a breathing belt that the patient wears. Finally, from this data, the AI is able to deduce whether the person has Parkinson’s disease or not. If so, she may even know the degree of substantia nigra degeneration like the Movement Disorder Society’s Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale.

AI and health prevention: the solution of the future?

As for the effectiveness of the device for detecting the Parkinson disease, it is 85% reliable. Indeed, 7,687 people have been tested and 757 of them are suffering from degenerative brain disorder according to the AI. Improvements and optimizations are still necessary for the device to give perfectly reliable results. Nevertheless, it is already a major advance in medicine and science. In the very near future, this will be the revolutionary solution to better fight against Parkinson’s disease and help early sufferers. Finally, this MIT project is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
