Is the 1X humanoid robot really the future of homes? – Digital Economy Blog

2024-09-10 08:22:38

The Norwegian company 1X recently presented NEO, the first humanoid robot designed for the general public and domestic use. Capable of carrying out daily tasks such as cleaning, it will be tested in several homes at the end of 2024 with a Beta version of the prototype.

Neo Beta also reveals its imposing five-fingered articulated hands, allowing it to grasp any object. In the video, his movements are so fluid that one might wonder if there really is a robot under that suit. In addition, it is difficult to know whether the robot is remotely controlled or whether the manipulations it performs have been entirely programmed as a choreography.

The humanoid robot that defies expectations

The NEO robot is not a disguise for humans, but mysteries remain. According to the 1X website, NEO is 1.65 meters tall, weighs 30 kilograms, walks at 4 km/h, runs at 12 km/h and can carry up to 20 kilograms. With a battery life of 2 to 4 hours, it impresses with its performance. 1X specifies that NEO is designed with a “muscular anatomy” rather than a rigid hydraulic system, giving it capabilities close to those of humans.

Price and launch date still uncertain

Would you like to purchase the 1X NEO robot? Unfortunately, the marketing date of this humanoid remains unknown for the moment. Before that, the company must complete a testing phase planned for the end of 2024 in selected homes, to ensure that its product is safe.

The price has not been communicated either. For comparison, Elon Musk has repeatedly promised that the Tesla Optimus will be priced under $20,000, while Unitree is already selling its G1 robot for $16,000.

In any case, with the launch of this first humanoid robot intended for the general public, 1X is accelerating the democratization of this revolutionary technology!

NEO is here, but is it really functional?

Tech giants like Boston Dynamics, Tesla, Xiaomi, and even Apple (which is reportedly working on a domestic robot) are taking a keen interest in robots designed to assist humans. The question remains: in what form will they appear, and will the public embrace them? In the case of 1X, the company seems to be betting on a replica of the human body, but this does not necessarily guarantee success. It also remains to resolve the challenges related to potential bugs and make the robot truly useful. In summary, although NEO exists, its effectiveness and real usefulness have yet to be demonstrated.
