Japan regains first place among domestic beer importers

Photo = Yonhap News Japan once more ranked first among domestic beer importers. This is because compared to the same period last year, Japanese beer imports have more than tripled.

According to the Korea Customs Service’s trade statistics on the 2nd, Japanese beer imports from January to August this year were 36,573 tons, accounting for 21.9% of the total beer imports, ranking first. This is because imports increased by 238.4% compared to the same period last year. Japan was followed by China (32,153 tons), the Netherlands (29,243 tons), Poland (11,291 tons), Germany (9,911 tons), the United States (9,876 tons), the Czech Republic (8,850 tons), and Ireland (8,705 tons). Last year, annual Japanese beer imports amounted to 18,940 tons, ranking third following China (46,504 tons) and the Netherlands (45,125 tons).

In 2018, Japan was the top domestic beer importing country. However, it plummeted to 47,331 tons in 2019, ranking third following Belgium (59,072 tons) and China (58,233 tons), and fell to 10th place in 2020. This is the effect of the boycott of Japanese products that took place in Korea in July 2019. At the time, a boycott began domestically when the Japanese government imposed export restrictions in protest once morest the Korean Supreme Court’s ruling on compensation for victims of forced conscription.

As time goes by, the boycott of Japanese beer appears to be weakening. In the ranking of domestic beer importing countries, Japan rose one step to 9th place in 2021, then recovered to 3rd place last year and regained 1st place this year.
