A 2022 survey by mobile phone company OnePlus (tenth in the global mobile phone market) revealed some interesting details regarding how Americans charge their cell phones. 69% of 1,000 users surveyed say they charge their cell phone at least twice a day. More than a third of those surveyed admitted they were concerned that frequent or overnight charging might damage their smartphone’s battery.
64% of those surveyed say they charge their phone all night while they sleep.
Selon Bankmycell, the current (2023) number of smartphone users worldwide is 6.92 billion, which means that 85.8% of the world’s population owns a smartphone. And if we include basic cell phones, the current number of mobile phone users is 7.33 billion, accounting for 90.90% of the world’s population owning a cell phone.
Some say that charging your cell phone at night is safe, while others directly advise once morest it. Let’s see what the main brands recommend.
Apple
With over 1.5 billion users worldwide, Apple is the company with the largest global share of the mobile phone market over the last 12 months: 29.6%.
Apple has 1.5 billion users worldwide.
Last August, Apple released a service announcement warning people that Sleeping on a charging device might cause fire, electric shock, injury, or damage to the phone or property. Taking surveys into account, this means that every night around a billion people are at risk, even if statistically small, of starting a fire.
Apple says its phone and USB power adapters can get hot while chargingwhich may cause inconvenience which may result in injury or damage.
“Use common sense to avoid situations where your skin comes into contact with the phone, its power adapter, or a wireless charger while it is operating or connected to a power source for extended periods of time.”
For example, do not sleep on the device, power adapter, or wireless charger, or place them under a blanket, pillow, or your body while connected to a power source. Keep iPhone, power adapter, and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when using or charging.
Samsung
There are around 1.033 billion users of phones made by the Korean giant in the global market, and their share is 24.2%.
After the problems with “explosive” lithium-ion batteries, Samsung was able to recover and gain ground by making it safer to handle the device during the charging period.
A Samsung battery is unlikely to be overcharged if you leave the phone plugged in overnight, the company claims, because once it reaches full charge, the charging process stops and is only reactivated periodically to keep the battery at full capacity. These occasional charges are simply “maintenance charges” that ensure the battery is fully charged when you unplug the phone.
Samsung recommends unplugging the phone following the battery is fully charged to extend its life, although the positive impact of this action is minimal.
If the device is left with the charger plugged in once fully charged, it will not be damagedbut it is recommended not to leave it on a pillow, blanket, sofa, etc., due to the risk of overheating.
Additionally, Samsung does not recommend using the device with games or demanding applications while charging, as it may overheat.
Xiaomi
The Chinese technology company, founded in 2010, quickly rose to the top positions in the world in consumer electronics. Its share of the global mobile phone market is 10.8% by 2023, with around 600 million users.
Xiaomi stands out for its models that can be charged almost completely in less than an hour, so charging at night is not advisable.
Xiaomi stands out for its ultra-fast chargers… and because its cell phones generally don’t charge 100%.. Indeed, when the mobile phone is charged more than 90%, it enters intelligent charging adjustment mode. This prevents damage to the phone itself and the battery caused by overcharging. When the phone is fully charged, it stops charging and starts consuming power.
When power consumption reaches a certain level, it intelligently adapts to the load, and so on. When the mobile phone is fully charged, it is normal for it to have more than 95% battery.
Tips for charging your cell phone
As we have seen, the risks of charging phones are minimal. The biggest risk is overheating, and it can be avoided with simple precautions.
Although it is safe to charge your cell phone while you sleep at night, it is advisable to do so in short bursts throughout the day.
In addition to avoiding it, we can establish some of these practices that will extend the life of your phone’s battery:
Keep your phone with the latest software updates. Use original or manufacturer-certified chargers.Avoid exposing your phone to extreme temperatures (phones operate optimally in ambient temperatures between 0°C and 35°C). While charging, do so on a rigid and preferably ventilated surface. Do not leave the phone charging on the pillow, blanket, mattress or on your body. New generation smartphones typically charge almost completely in 30 minutes to two hours. Avoid leaving them on charge overnight. Limiting charging to 80% of total capacity and preventing it from dropping below 20% will maximize battery life.
