Is it true that Ukrainians are proud that A. Pushkin’s killer was Ukrainian?

A statement posted on Facebook reads:

“The director of the Institute of National Memory of Ukraine, Anton Drobovich, presented evidence of the Ukrainian roots of Georges Dantes.
– Officer’s outfit, honor, dignity, courage and desire to be in respectable society. It is not surprising that at some point Dantes decided to tame the Russian monkey in the person of Pushkin.

Which he did very well.

Today, in the archives, it is easy to find records about the Ukrainian origin of the Dantes family, and his characterization only emphasizes his European temperament and our blood, – concluded Drobovičius. – confirmed in the published message.

However, the original source of this quote is not A. Drobovičius, but several pro-Russian Telegram channels, for example “Empire is very evil” (rus. The empire is very evil) and “Optimist in civilian clothes” (rus.Optimist in civilian clothes).

No publications on this topic could be found in the Ukrainian media or other sources in the Ukrainian language.

There are no publications about G.-Ch. d’Anthès and the Institute of National Memory of Ukraine on the website.

It was also not possible to find any reliable source that mentions the Ukrainian origin of the poet.

The dueling partner is French

G. d’Anthès, who killed A. Pushkin in a duel, was a representative of the French Alsatian family.

He received his education at the Saint-Cyr Military Academy, from where he left to serve in the Russian Empire, where he began his military career. When he was 24, he was adopted by the Dutch Baron Jacob Van Heeckeren (whose name and title he later inherited).

However historians thinkthat there was little paternal care in this union. It is assumed that the young man, who was willing to do a lot for profit, indulged the homosexual tendencies of Mr. Van Heeckeren.

In Russia, G.-Ch.d’Anthès married A.Pushkin’s sister, and this rapprochement could have been the cause of the tragedy.

After the duel, G.-Ch.d’Anthès was forced to urgently leave Russia, and in France became a successful politician – parliamentarian and senator.

There is no evidence that he is connected to Ukraine or of Ukrainian origin.

Based on this, it can be said that the statement attributed to A. Drobovićis is completely fictitious.

It can be assumed that this is deliberate disinformation spread by the propaganda of the Russian Federation, related to the dismantling of many monuments in Ukraine, including monuments to A. Pushkin.

Because the Institute of National Memory of Ukraine directly involved in this process, propaganda can also be directed against him, and one of the methods is to try to blacken the head of the institution by attributing to him fictitious claims.

The distribution of such messages through Telegram channels, from which they reach other social networks and can be reproduced in Russian media, is also a well-known and common method of disseminating propaganda disinformation.

15min verdict: lie. A. Drobovičius never spoke about the alleged Ukrainian origin of G. d’Anthès.

The publication was prepared in 15 minutes in partnership with Metawhich aims to stop the spread of misleading news on the social network. More about the program and its rules – here.
