After closing a deal to buy Twitter, Elon Musk has joked in a tweet regarding the possibility of buy coke to reintroduce cocaine into the soda. With 4.2 million likes, it is the third most liked tweet of all time. But is what he says true?
I’m not talking regarding the possibility of Elon Musk buying Coca-Cola. After all, The Coca-Cola Company is a $286.93 billion company, and Elon Musk only He has a net worth of $246.2 billion, according to Forbes. I mean, did Coca-Cola really contain cocaine in the old days?
The answer is yes, but only a little.
Coca-Cola was created in 1885 by pharmacist John Pemberton as a non-alcoholic version of coca wine, an invigorating drink of the French upper classes that contained coca leaves and Bordeaux.
The original formula of Coca-Cola contained three ingredients then considered medicinal: damiana (a plant to which aphrodisiac properties are attributed), cola nut (a seed of tropical origin rich in caffeine) and coca leaf extract (a precursor of cocaine called ecgonine).
We don’t know exactly how much ecgonine was in the original Coca-Cola, but in the 1902 formula there was only 1/400 part left per ounce of the drink.

La Coca-Cola dejó de tener aspiraciones medicinales en 1930, cuando la sociedad había caído en la cuenta de lo dañina que era realmente la cocaína. El alcaloide desapareció casi por completo del refresco, y no se lo ha vuelto a ver.
