Is it safe to wash electric cars? | Business

The popularity of electric cars in Lithuania is growing rapidly, and already in 2024. in June, their number reached more than 22 thousand.

As the fleet of electric cars expands, misconceptions regarding their maintenance are increasing. One of the most common myths is the fear of washing electric cars, but in fact it is not regular washing, but insufficient care that can harm them. Edgaras Stanevičius, the innovation manager of PRO BRO Express, the fastest growing network of tunnel car washes in Europe, draws attention to the most common mistakes made when washing electric cars.

“Many car owners think that washing an electric car can damage its electrical parts,” says E. Stanevičius. – However, these fears are unfounded and can cause more damage, because if the car is not washed regularly, especially in winter, the accumulated dirt on it can lead to corrosion. Nevertheless, EV owners and car wash operators should take some precautions.”

Washing electric cars is safe as long as safety is followed

Electric vehicles are characterized by a sealed electrical system that is protected once morest water ingress, so neither rain nor washing them is dangerous for them. Nevertheless, some electric car owners are concerned that washing them in a tunnel car wash might damage them.

According to the head of innovation, all washing methods, including tunnel washers, high-pressure water jets or steam cleaners, do not pose a risk to electric cars. The most important thing is to make sure that the car is switched off and the charging port is closed before washing. E. Stanevičius also confirms that electric cars do not need special detergents, so they use the same cleaning products as motor vehicles.

Left mud is a danger to the car

Electric car owners are especially worried regarding tunnel car washes, because they believe that the washing conveyors or other mechanisms used in them can be dangerous for their car.

“The main requirements for cars are specified in the rules of the car wash. Basically, if the car is technically sound, with an undamaged body or glass and with original quality parts – there is no reason to worry. For complete peace of mind, you can always check the car owner’s manual, which contains specific instructions and precautions that will help you avoid possible dangers during washing,” advises E. Stanevičius.

It is often mistakenly believed that water can be particularly damaging to the chassis of an electric car. However, the expert points out that this part is usually well protected and designed to withstand the effects of water. In the same way, sealed batteries are reliably protected once morest water penetration. Regular cleaning of the underside is not only safe, but also helps remove dirt that can cause corrosion over time. This type of maintenance not only preserves the appearance of the car, but also ensures the longevity of the parts, contributing to a more reliable driving experience and the long-term efficiency of the electric car.

Paradoxically, it is not regular washing, but on the contrary, insufficient care that can cause negative consequences for electric cars.
“By removing contaminants such as salt, pollen, bird droppings and road grime, vehicle owners can avoid potential corrosion damage,” notes the expert. “Both electric and conventional cars need regular cleaning in order to maintain the car’s appearance and its lasting value.”
