O X (ex-Twitter) began selling names of old deactivated profiles for more than US$50,000, around R$245,000 in direct conversion, releasing new @ options on the social network. This measure was announced by Elon Musk in May this year, when the billionaire revealed his interest in taking advantage of the “wave of bans” at the time to make new names available.
At the time, the platform owner commented on the case stating that X would start deleting inactive accounts in order to free up more options in the application. On his official profile, the businessman explained that the decision was necessary due to the high number of accounts taken over by bots and trolls, generally used for spamming.
Email messages obtained by Forbes, an American magazine focused on business, reveal that a division of X was destined for the registration of these “arrobas” that will be sold by the company. Apparently, big tech has started to contact some people and companies potentially interested in acquiring the usernames that will be released in the future.
There is still no information on when the “auction” of users will be announced, but considering Musk’s strong interest in monetizing the platform it is expected to happen soon. The service’s terms of use reinforce the need to log into the account at least once every 30 days so the profile is not considered “inactive”.
Recently, X launched two new subscription plans on the global market. With the new feature, the app now offers the following plans: Basic, Premium and Premium Plus. These recently launched new products arrive in Brazil costing R$15.75/month, R$42/month and R$84/month for individuals, respectively.
