Donald Trump wants to be the Republican presidential candidate once more. If he doesn’t succeed, according to his former minister, he might “burn down the whole house”.

Palm Beach – With performances in the states of New Hampshire and South Carolina, the former US President Donald Trump officially started its campaign for a presidential candidacy for the 2024 US election. Trump is currently the only candidate for the Republican Partyprobably his toughest competitor Ron DeSantis has not yet announced a candidacy – many conservatives, however, would like to the Florida governor as the next president.

In this case, Trump has already indirectly indicated that he would withdraw from the party and run as an independent candidate. In a post on his social network Truth Social at the end of December, the ex-president shared an article on the conservative website American Greatness, which said Trump might leave the “GOP” (Grand Old Party) to punish them for their “disloyalty”. A move that would split party votes and most likely quash ambitions for a Republican presidency.

“Republicans have to worry that should Trump decide to run as an independent, he would guarantee the Democrats to win the White House in 2024,” investigative journalist David Cay Johnston said Q+A. According to the Pulitzer Prize winner, DeSantis will soon be “the standard-bearer for the Republicans.”

Will Republicans choose DeSantis? Trump might ‘burn down the whole house’

Recent opinion polls also indicate thisthat Trump is losing ground among Republican supporters and Ron DeSantis is seen as the first choice by much of the electorate. Bill Barr, who served as Trump’s attorney general, recently wrote in an opinion piece for the New York Postthat in 2024 Trump might make good on his threat and try to “burn down the whole house” if he doesn’t win the party’s presidential nomination.

Donald Trump ran for the Reform Party back in 2000, but left following the primary. Whether he is willing to take a similar step once more remains to be seen if DeSantis’ popularity continues to gain momentum. Trump reportedly threatened to quit the party following his 2020 election defeat, when many Republicans refused to contest the presidential election result. In his book Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show, he wrote ABCCorrespondent Jonathan Karl said Trump was “done” with Republicans.

Trump is said to have told Ronna McDaniel, Chair of the Republican National Committee, that he wanted to start his own party. “That’s what Republicans deserve for not standing up for me,” the former president is quoted as saying. However, Trump later called the story “fake news”. (nak)
