Starting today, Wednesday, the Chinese city of Chengdu will conduct mass tests for its residents for the detection of Covid-19 and will continue until November 27according to a government notice issued late yesterday evening.
“In order to discover the injured as soon as possible andCut the chain of transmission and limit the rapid spread of the epidemicThe health authorities decided to conduct mass tests across the city from November 23-27.
This comes as the National Health Committee stated, today, Wednesday, that China recorded 29,157 new cases of coronavirus on November 22, of which 2,719 were symptomatic and 26,438 were asymptomatic.
China recorded 28,127 new infections the previous day, of which 2,225 were symptomatic and 25,902 were asymptomatic.
China did not record new deaths, following recording two cases the previous day, keeping the total at 5,231.
As of Tuesday, mainland China had recorded 293,506 infections that showed symptoms of the Corona virus.
Local government data indicated that the capital, Beijing, recorded 338 new infections with symptoms and 1,098 without symptoms. 274 symptomatic and 1,164 asymptomatic cases were recorded the previous day.
And the local health authority in Shanghai, the financial center of China, stated that it had recorded 15 cases with symptoms and 53 without symptoms, compared to six four cases with symptoms and 44 without symptoms the previous day.
The second economic power in the world adheres to the “zero Covid” policy, imposing sudden closure measures, large-scale examinations and quarantines to control the spread of the epidemic, a policy that succeeded in the early stages of the spread of the virus.
But the recent wave of infections is a test of how resilient this policy is, while officials seek to avoid a city-wide lockdown, as happened in Shanghai for two months in April, as the restrictions at that time undermined the economy of the financial center and its image internationally.
While the capital has so far avoided a full lockdown, certain buildings have been locked down while residents queued for COVID tests, as many public places require residents to obtain a negative test result 24 hours in advance as a condition of entry.
At the end of the week, the authorities recommended that residents stay in their homes and not move between regions.
On Monday, travelers coming to the city were required to undergo further checks upon arrival.
Many tourist venues, gyms and parks have closed, while major events such as concerts have been cancelled.
