Collagen is a molecule from the protein family, naturally present in our body. It structures skin, hair, muscle and tendons, and even bones. Collagen in particular gives elasticity to the skin. And it contributes to the flexibility and robustness of the hair.
It is logical to think that ingesting collagen slows down aging, especially since, inevitably, our body produces less and less of it as we age. How to stock up on collagen?
Studies funded by the cosmetics industry
Foods rich in collagen exist: bone broth, fish and meat. But food supplements, pure collagen, are a more effective way to provide a large quantity without exaggerating the consumption of these foods. There are many forms of collagen: in powder, in drink, of animal or even plant origin.

A few other studies have shown that collagen-rich drinks are also effective in improving skin quality. Concerning hair and nails, to date, the level of proof of the benefit of collagen supplements is very slim.
Most of this work is financed by the cosmetics industry. This does not overwhelm the scientific interest of the results. But honestly, the resulting communication goes well beyond factual scientific results. The scientific data is much less miraculous than what is advertised.
We must also be aware of the fact that there are countless offers on the market and that most of them have not been scientifically evaluated. It is a mistake to consider that all products on the market are equal, as soon as they are marked “purified collagen”.

As for the risks of these collagen supplements, apart from digestive disorders in certain people, nothing negative has been described. However, as with all food supplements, it is difficult to confirm long-term safety. Especially since they contain additives and can be contaminated by heavy metals or pollutants, particularly in certain poorly purified collagen supplements of marine origin.
So in practice, if you want to try collagen supplements, why not. In the short term, you will surely see a benefit, as is the case every time we make an effort to take care of ourselves. Regarding the specific effects of the dietary supplement, maybe there will be some… or maybe not. The main question is how long to continue supplementation? As a reminder, the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety, ANSES, recommends avoiding prolonged, repeated or multiple intakes of food supplements.
