Is Arienne Thien a firefighter pyromaniac? Objective criticism or attempt at destabilization? (by L’Oeil du Cheikh)

You may have noticed, as you yourself have, that only a few months after BASF came to power, the political scene is already gripped by internal tensions, driven in large part by criticism including from civil society icon Alyon Thien.

Mr. Tine recently pointed out an alleged “Role confusion” A conversation between President Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. According to him, Sonko seems to be taking control of power, relegating Diomaye Faye to a secondary role. This observation might be seen as simple political analysis, but in fact has a more insidious side, namely a deliberate attempt to create divisions at the top of the country.

But is Alioune Thiene really playing the role of arsonist? Is he fanning a political fire that he then claims to put out? The question is worth asking. By threatening to confuse the roles between president and prime minister, Thiene appears to be trying to sow discord within the executive branch, with the unstated aim of weakening the duo that represents the hope for Senegal’s renaissance.

It is also important to remind Mr. Thien that Macky Sall is no longer the president of Senegal. During his rule, he was everywhere, in the ovens and factories, centralizing all decisions despite the presence of ministers and the prime minister who, in theory, should have played an important role. Today, the Sall era is over, and with it his authoritarian and highly centralized governance model that lasted for twelve years.
The Senegalese people, by electing Diomaye Faye as President, chose to turn the page and opt for a more collegial and shared management of power.

We must also remind him that if Senegalese voted in large numbers for Diomaye, he must recognize that it was thanks to Sankoh. President Diomaye, with his legendary humility, was the first to recognize that. Let us not forget
With 10 days to go until the election deadline, many of his voters have never heard his voice and may not even have seen his face. Nevertheless, he is our beloved president, and he is largely up to the task.
presidential palace.

Mr. Thien and other critics must be happy to have one of the best elected presidents in the world. Even in countries considered “major democracies” it is common to see financial and/or religious lobbies behind most presidential elections. They must be happy that the heads of state have a coalition that does not crush each other, and that, unlike what we are used to seeing, has the same vision and the same goals.

Alioune Thiene’s criticism therefore seems unfounded and even premature. Before drawing hasty conclusions about the governance of the new president and prime minister, Faye Sonko, it would be wise to give the latter time to prove their ability to lead the country together without falling into the traps of their predecessors. Finally, it is difficult not to see in Mr Thiene’s attack a kind of nostalgia for the past, when he and others may have had the privileges that are now threatened. By seeking to reignite tensions, he may hope to once again become a key player in the Senegalese political scene, but the game is a dangerous one that could undermine the stability that is so precious.

Senegalese patriots must remain focused on the primary goal: restoring a country weakened by twelve years of bad governance. Unfounded criticism and political manipulation must not distract us from this mission. Tine and other opponents can continue to fire, but Senegalese will not be fooled by tactics designed to divide. Senegal needs unity, not arsonists masquerading as firefighters.
