Has the Gabonese president, in power since 2009, kept his promises? As he prepares to run for a third term, this is the question asked by a team of researchers, economists and volunteers, who investigated the achievements of the “My commitment to an emerging Gabon” program, proposed by Ali Bongo Odimba (ABO) during his presidential candidacy in 2016. According to their report, the achievement rate would be only 12%. Of the 105 promises made by the then candidate president, only 13 were said to have been fully kept, 33 partially and 59 were not followed through.
The shortcomings noted par the authors of the report mainly concern investments in infrastructure, waste management, real estate development and tourism. For example, efforts to connect 100,000 additional citizens to the drinking water network and erect five new hydroelectric dams have not been successful. Ditto for the modernization of the Melen hospital, the construction of twenty schools, 700 crèches, a commercial port and an ore port.
