Many people think that blood clots are hard lumps that form inside the veins of the pelvic legs. However, sometimes, the clots can move under the skin, giving the appearance of a rash that may appear in several places.
In a strange case of a British man, blood clots caused a rash that appeared to move from one part of his body to another, according to the British newspaper Express.
When a blood clot forms it can stop the normal flow of blood, causing pressure to build up inside the vein. Although it often remains still, part of the clot can break off, enter the bloodstream and travel to the lungs.
Sometimes clotting occurs in the veins under the surface of the skin, a condition known as superficial thrombophlebitis. The condition can also be described as ambulatory, which means that the clot returns in a different part of the body.
WebMD explains: “The clot often travels from one leg to the other, as superficial thrombophlebitis results in inflammation of a vein near the surface of the skin, which results in visible symptoms.”
In the British man’s case report, doctors describe venous thrombosis occurring below the surface of the skin of the forearm. This was the case for a 62-year-old man who went to hospital with abdominal pain, loss of appetite, jaundice and dark urine.
The report stated: “The patient described a rash in multiple areas during the previous weeks, and paramedics indicated that these findings were consistent with migratory thrombophlebitis.”
Doctors noted a “minor rash” on the patient’s right forearm and left “lower limb”, which was noted two months following the patient was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
The report notes that the diagnosis was made easy by discovering that the man had previously had pancreatic cancer.
This is because it is well established that pancreatic cancer causes blood to clot more easily, and in many cases it is the first sign of a tumour.
These thrombotic events are usually considered a disease of the lower extremities, but as the case study shows, they can occur in many parts of the body.
“Often, it can affect the breast, chest wall, penis or upper extremity,” explained the British Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
Symptoms include swelling and redness along part of the veins and a possible high temperature.
When the inflammation has settled, a darkened area of skin can be seen over the affected vein. You may also be able to feel a small, hard lump under the skin, which is tender to the touch.
Because of the unknown symptoms of blood clots, doctors advise other doctors to check for any underlying malignancy in patients with skin rashes.
“Any patient presenting with a migratory rash without an underlying diagnosis of exclusive malignancy should be investigated,” the case study authors said.
