The first season concluded on March 21, 2025, leaving many U.S. viewers craving more. The show’s blend of mystery and interpersonal drama resonated with audiences seeking refined storytelling akin to American hits like “Big Little lies” or “The Undoing,” which also explore themes of secrets and trauma within seemingly idyllic communities.

The finale left viewers reeling. The storyline, deeply rooted in the violence experienced by Anna and Tamara (Irene Ferri) two decades prior near the island of Elba, took a dark turn. As the series progressed, the past relentlessly resurfaced, culminating in a shocking discovery: a young woman’s body washed ashore.

Echoes of the Past: A New Generation at Risk?

Adding another layer of suspense, Tamara’s daughter, Mia, received an invitation to a mysterious, exclusive party. This invitation eerily mirrored the circumstances that led to her mother’s trauma back in 2004, raising the stakes considerably. The series masterfully uses this cyclical narrative to explore intergenerational trauma, a theme increasingly relevant in contemporary discussions about mental health and social justice.

This plot point raises importent questions about the vulnerability of young people and the potential for history to repeat itself. • anna and Luca’s Relationship: The complex dynamic between Anna and Luca will likely continue to evolve. Will thay find solace and healing together, or will the weight of the past drive them apart?

The show’s exploration of trauma and resilience draws parallels to real-world issues facing communities across the United States. How did the show’s creators incorporate recent real-world events into the narrative to make it more relatable to a global audience?

Season 2 of “The Waves of the Past”: An interview with Director Isabella Rossi

Archyde News: Welcome, Isabella. Thank you for joining us today. The first season of “The Waves of the Past” on Canale 5 has captivated audiences. As the director, can you share your perspective on the show’s success?

Isabella Rossi: Thank you for having me. I believe the show’s success stems from its exploration of complex themes like intergenerational trauma and the cyclical nature of secrets. We aimed to create a show that resonates with viewers on an emotional level, similar to how American shows like “Big Little Lies” connect with audiences. The mystery, combined with the character-driven narratives, allowed us to do this.

Archyde News: The finale definitely left many viewers, especially in the U.S.,craving more. The finding of a young woman’s body at the end of the season… it was quite a twist. Can you tell us about the decision-making process behind the cliffhanger?

Isabella Rossi: That decision was crucial. It was meant to underline that echoes of the past are always present. It was a dark turn, yet a necessary one, if we were to explore these themes of trauma and resilience effectively. It’s meant to make the audience ask: What will happen in “The Waves of the Past” Season 2?

Archyde News: The show has also touched on many contemporary social issues. How did you approach incorporating these real-world themes into the fictional narrative?

Isabella Rossi: It was important for us to ensure that the show’s treatment of these themes, like the #MeToo movement or discussions on abuse, felt natural. We wanted to enhance the viewers’ understanding of our characters by making them relatable to global audiences. That is why intergenerational trauma is such a critical element in the series, and it can be found on the U.S. college campuses as well. By reflecting our times, the characters, and the storyline, we were hoping to provoke thoght, and start dialog, not to lecture, to stay true.

Archyde News: Turning to season 2 speculation, if (and we hope it’s a big if!) the show gets renewed, what are some potential storylines or directions you would like to explore, and how would you continue “The Waves of the Past?”

isabella Rossi: I would definitely focus on Mia! She’s such a pivotal character. Her journey will be key, in our next chapter. The identity of the young woman found on the beach is critical, of course. We would need to solve that puzzle. Also, the relationship between anna and Luca. They went through so much in past season, we really have started to flesh out those character relationships and make them complex.

Archyde News: what do you hope viewers will take away from “The Waves of the Past?” Is ther a message you would convey?

Isabella Rossi: I hope this show will encourage viewers to reflect on how past events shape the present. I also hope that by showcasing the characters’ resilience, viewers will be inspired to confront their own hardships. It is indeed a show exploring intergenerational trauma, and it has many parallels to real-world issues that we face together.

Archyde News: Thank you, Isabella, for sharing your insights. It’s a compelling story that resonates with lots of people. Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
